From Hurao to Fanohge

Image
This Saturday, September 20th, Independent GuĂ„han will be holding a Teach-In at Senator Angel Santos Memorial Latte Stone Park from 2 - 4 pm titled "From Hurao to Fanohge: 350 Years of Chamoru Resistance." This event is free and open to anyone. The title comes from two key events in understanding Chamoru history and resistance to colonialism in its different forms across time.   In September 1670/1671, Maga’lĂ„hi Hurao who had been gathering families who were frustrated with the new Spanish presence in the Marianas and forming a coalition to oppose their interference, was arrested by Spanish soldiers and taken prisoner in the church. Hurao's speech is meant to be an example of the rhetoric that he was using that was inspiring so many families to come forth and offer their spears and slingstones in support of his cause.   An estimated 2,000 warriors surrounded the church, which had been hastily transformed into a fort, to demand his release and the surrender of the ...

Talking Decolonization and Presidential Politics

Image
Every day I have a conversation about Guam and its political status and decolonization. At least once a week though, I have a conversation about decolonization or political status that crosses territorial lines.  It might be between Guam and any of the other territories or colonies of the United States.  It might be just a comparative discussion about where each territory is at. It might be a conversation undertaken to talk about how one territory should learn the lessons that others have.  For example, Puerto Rico being so much larger than the other territories, it is common to see the Independence movement there as looming large, and to feel that there is much other territories can learn from Puerto Rican independence activists about growing or sustaining their own movements.  But the visibility of the movement, especially given the larger population of Puerto Ricans in general, can sometimes obscure the fact that within Puerto Rico, the dynamics are much more comp...

A Man for All Seasons

Image
Last week on the "Studies of the Chamorro" Facebook page I conducted a Teach-In titled "Robert Underwood: A Man for All Seasons." The Teach-In went very well, and despite only announcing it the day before,  according to Facebook it already has 6K views.  Part of my impetus for organizing the Teach-In has to deal with the current election and the race between current Guam non-voting delegate Michael San Nicolas and former Congressman Robert Underwood who is seeking to replace him. It has been frustrating to say the least to see so much commentary in the community that our current delegate has done more in a year and a half than his two predecessors did in decades. It has been frustrating to s ee some argue that Robert Underwood didn't do anything while in Congress.  Whether you support a candidate or not, their record and their accomplishments should stand. They should not be up for debate simply because you don't like someone. If that type of rhetoric is per...

FESTPAC Teach-In

Image
The Festival of Pacific Arts and Cultures takes place in a different island in the Pacific every four years. This is considered to be the most important event in the Pacific in terms of culture and regional solidarity. It is a chance for each island to showcase their own culture and artistic expression, while meeting with others across the Pacific.  Recently there has been some negativity in Guam around FESTPAC 2020 and the idea of the Government of Guam funding 100 delegates to travel there. There is a significant amount of misinformation floating around, which is unfortunate, since it threatens to tar this important event.  To learn more about the value of FESTPAC and its role in Guam’s cultural renaissance and movement for decolonization, Independent GuĂ„han is holding a Teach-In on the topic on Thursday, January 16th at 6 pm at UOG HSS 106.

The Organic Act Explained

Image
Independent GuĂ„han to offer Teach-In on The Organic Act, its past, present and future For Immediate Release, October 13, 2019-  Independent GuĂ„han (IG) invites the public to attend a Teach-In titled “The Organic Act Explained” on Thursday, October 17 th from 6 pm – 7:30 pm at University of Guam, Humanities and Social Sciences Building Room 106. This event is free and open to the public and will also be live streamed on the Independent GuĂ„han Facebook page ( www.facebook.com/independentgu ) Recently, Guam’s non-voting delegate to the US Congress Michael San Nicolas introduced a bill in Washington D.C. to amend the Organic Act for Guam, which would require that a public referendum be held prior to any tax increase for the island. The delegate also has plans to introduce future amendments, in order to compel prompt payment of tax refunds for local residents. Discussion on these proposed reforms has been unfortunately limited, in part by a general lack of knowledge and und...

Independent GuÄhan Teach-In - Filipino Revolutionary History

Image
TEACH-IN: FILIPINO REVOLUTIONARY HISTORY’S CONNECTION TO GUAM’S SELF-DETERMINATION HAGATÑA, GUAM (July 11, 2017) - As part of their monthly Teach-In Sessions, Independent GuĂ„han will be holding a session introducing Filipino Revolutionary History and how Filipino struggles for independence are connected to CHamoru self-determination. The Teach-In will feature Josephine Ong, Kristin Oberiano, Jamela Santos and Ruzelle Almonds. “As Filipinos living on Guam, we need to acknowledge that the fight for CHamoru self-determination is a fight for the ideals of self-governance, sovereignty, and freedom - the same principles that led to the establishment of the Philippines, the USA, and other independent countries around the world,” says Oberiano, whose grandfather came to Guam during the Camp Roxas Era. All four presenters are Filipinos who consider Guam their home and are passionate about the conversation on the island’s political status. Through the teach-i...

Decolonization in the Caribbean #15: Solidarity Lessons

Image
For places like Guam that lack a formal place within the international system and to an extent the national system of the US, solidarity is of critical importance. Without a formal place, you are invisible or you direct power over the structure around you. There was ways that you can fight for power, that you can seize it, but solidarity is an important part of changing your invisibility or your lack of visibility and therefore lack of relevance of standing, into something different, something more strategic. As the movement for decolonization and independence grows in Guam, it is important that we find ways to connect it to other potentially similar movements, which can offer lessons or inspirations on the way forward. This was the case in the past, where members of Nasion Chamoru achieved a greater sense of their place in the world through interacting with people who were members of Black and Brown Power movements in the US, and also from postwar elite Chamorros who felt affinity w...

Fanhokkayan #4: Minagahet Mission

Image
The other day Independent GuÄhan's held it's April teach-in at UOG, this time with a focus on "democratizing the media." The discussion focused on Guam's media landscape and ways that community members can create alternative means of educating or informing people on island about pertinent issues. For years I ran a number of different forms of alternative media, such as blogs, websites, podcasts and even a zine called Minagahet. From 2003-2010 I, and sometimes others ed ited a zine which focused on Chamorro issues from a critical and largely progressive perspective. You can still find it online, although the last issue was released during the DEIS comment period in early 2010. The name Minagahet which means "truth" came from a comment that a friend of mine had written on a message board many many years ago. It was an exchange with some Chamorros who felt that decolonization was stupid and impossible. My friend had written a long response see...

Trump Check In

Image
Independent GuĂ„han organizes Trump Check-In A follow-up to their successful Trump Teach-In from last November. On November 15, 2016, Independent GuĂ„han organized a teach-in titled “What Does a Trump Presidency Mean for Guam?” The Teach-In, held just a week after the election of Donald Trump as the next President of the United States, drew a crowd of more than 70 concerned community members to the University of Guam.   In the months since, Donald Trump has now been sworn in as President of the United States, and the country has been rocked by continuous protests over his proposed policies and already signed executive orders. There is a great cloud of uncertainty hanging over the United States and Guam is not exempted from this. As Trump begins to unravel existing economic and military alliances, and make aggressive moves towards China, the people of Guam are right to worry about how Trump’s term might affect their island. In response to these pu...

War Reparations Teach-In

Trump Teach-In Coverage

Image
In response to the confusion and anxiety on the island following Donald Trump's electoral college victory over Hillary Clinton last month, I decided to organize Teach-In on what Trump's reign might mean for Guam. I was expecting a small crowd of maybe 20 or 30 students. In truth, we had more than 70 people attend, with most of them staying almost an hour past the end time to keep asking questions and discussing their concerns. The Teach-In was so successful that I would like to have a monthly teach-in based on relevant issues in the community. The next one that I'm planning is on war reparations scheduled tentatively for January 5th. Stay tuned for more information. *************************** Trump Teach-In at UOG Calls for Independent Political Status by Bruce Lloyd The Pacific Island Times December 6, 2016 In the spirit of the anti-Vietnam War teach-ins that informed opposition to that war in the 1960s, members of the Guam Commission on Decolonization Tuesd...

Independence General Assembly - December

Image
Independent GuĂ„han invites the public to attend its fifth General Assembly on Thursday, December 22 from 6 – 7:30 p.m. at the main pavilion of the Chamorro Village in HagĂ„tña. The meeting will focus on water and what GuĂ„han can do as an independent country to preserve this precious resource. Water is an essential element for human life across the Pacific and around the world. HĂ„nom is one of the six elements that are invoked each day by thousands across the island when reciting the Inifresi. At present, our access to clean and safe water sources is complicated by the U.S. Navy’s ownership of Fena Lake in the south and the potential damage to the northern aquifer outlined in the Record of Decision should the U.S. continue to increase its military presence on GuĂ„han. As an independent country, we would be able to control access and use of these resources to ensure that future generations have clean and reliable water. Next week’s General Assembly will focus on policies ...

Trump

Image
It has been weeks now since the US presidential election ended. Recounts are taking place in certain states. Protests are still sparking in certain areas across the US. Basic political conventions continue to be challenged as Trump tweets constantly and thinks rarely. As Guam is often simply subsumed within the flow of American power and politics, it is easy to just sit and watch and imagine ourselves along for the ride. But just as President Trump means a great deal of uncertainty for the US in general, the same goes for Guam, albeit in our own particular ways. This is a great piece by Tom Maxedon from The Sunday Post which covers alot of group in terms of imagining what a Trump administration might look like. Things have changed somewhat since it was written last week, but most of it is still in place. I'm glad that he was able to attend the Trump Teach-In that we had at the University of Guam last month. As much of what I suggested during my presentation already seems to be co...
