Rematriation Welcome Ceremony and Blessing

In 2025, the Bishop Museum in Hawai’i began the process of rematriating the 10,000+ piece Hornbostel Collection to the Marianas. The first wave which arrived in 2025 included latte, burial adornment, sinahi and rare decorated pottery. The second wave of returns, which includes slingstones, fish hooks and pottery, numbers more than 3,000 pieces and has arrived on island. The Guam Museum is holding a welcoming ceremony and blessing for these cultural treasures next Friday, November 13 from 12-2 pm at the Guam Cultural Repository.

The public is invited to attend, but the ceremony and viewing will take place in the GCR Research Room, which can only hold approximately 30 people at a time. In case its full people may need to wait in the lobby until space is freed to view the artifacts.

These pieces, along with others that have been rematriated will be showcased in an exhibit next month at the museum. That exhibition will chronicle both the history of their taking and their return. Follow the Guam Museum's social media for updates on the exact opening for the exhibit.
